Ever since the birth of the internet, music lovers have been searching for a way to obtain free legal music. Internet piracy has grown to become a major problem in the music industry as record sales and overall earnings for artists have deteriorated to next to nothing. Companies like Napster and iTunes hoped to slow down the negative effects of illegal downloading by offering an easy way to download music legally at a small price. However, the easy access to free music elsewhere on the internet proved to be too much.

The music industry is hoping that the launch of Spotify, which offers easy access to over 1 million free legal music songs to its users can help artists and record companies make money off of their product once again.

All a user needs to do is sign up with a Facebook account and they have instant access to a stream of over a million free Spotify also overs a premium version of their account which, for a small fee, allows users unlimited access to all the music and even allows them to stream music from their portable devices such as their iPhones and iPads. Users also have the option to add songs to their own personal play lists, and lets friends combine and share play lists with each other as well. Users have the option of sharing their information with their Facebook friends and showing what music they are listening to on their profile and live feed.

The birth of Spotify shows great innovation and may just be the start of a movement towards free legal music in a world where hard copies of music are quickly becoming obsolete. If the music industry wants to survive in an internet based world, it certainly needs to think outside the box.
